HOT SHEET FOR MONDAY, JULY 31ST, 1995

RADIO

1. MORNINGSIDE:

Today on Morningside in the Summer, a look at the future of Hong Kong. In
two years, the British colony will revert to Chinese rule. Will China
maintain Hong Kong's special status, with democratic elections, a free
press and an independent judiciary? Or will it crack down on dissidents,
expel journalists and allow corruption to blossom, as it does elsewhere in
China. Hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong residents have already fled to
Canada, and more could join them as Chinese rule approaches. Join host Paul
Kennedy for an exploration of the future of Hong Kong, on Morningside in
the Summer, 9:05 to noon, (9:35 to 12:30 NT) on CBC Radio.

2. ENCORE GABEREAU:

Dr. Allan Hirsch is both a psychiatrist and neurologist. It's a perfect
background for a man who studies the sense of smell. He studies odors and
human behavior, and he currently runs the Smell and Taste Treatment and
Research Foundation in Chicago. Dr. Allan Hirsch is Vicki's guest on Encore
Gabereau at 3:05 (3:35 NT) this afternoon, right after Crosswords with Bill
Richardson.

3. AS IT HAPPENS:

Pamela Wallin once worked on As It Happens as a producer. Well, she's back,
sharing hosting duties with Barbara Budd, and doing all kinds of interviews
for the entire week. Also on Monday's program, a summertime story from
Front Porch Al. It's "A Girl's Story," written by the Canadian author,
David Arnason. That's on As it Happens, with Pamela Wallin and Barbara
Budd, tonight at 6:30 (7:00 NT) on CBC Radio.

4. SUMMER NIGHTS: STUART MACLEAN AT THE VINYL CAFE:

There's more music and talk by master storyteller Stuart McLean tonight at
the Vinyl Cafe. He's been inspired by his visits to the world's smallest
record store, which sells only records that appeal to its eccentric owner.
Tonight Dave, the owner of the Vinyl Cafe, and his wife Morley decide
they're fed up with the daily grind. They decide to take the day off work.
Find out what happens with Stuart MacLean at The Vinyl Cafe, tonight at
8:05 (8:35 NT) on CBC Radio.

5. BETWEEN THE COVERS:

Tonight on Between the Covers, another episode of "The Stone Diaries", by
Carol Shields. "The Stone Diaries" was the talk of the town this year, and
it won both the Governor General's Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Tonight,
Daisy Goodwill gets an earful from her soon to be mother-in-law. That's
tonight on Between the Covers, right after the 10 o'clock news (10:30 NT)
on CBC Radio.

STEREO

6. THE ARTS TONIGHT:

This evening on The Arts Tonight, a performance by the 13 Strings of
Ottawa, conducted by Paul Andreas Mahr, with guest soprano Monica Wicher.
That's this evening on The Arts Tonight, with hosts Shelagh Rogers and
Peter Tiefenbach, beginning at 6:30 (7:00 NT) on CBC Stereo.

TELEVISION

7. JUST FOR LAUGHS:

Monday Nights are a perfect opportunity for grins galore, as Just For
Laughs presents new episodes from the Montreal International Comedy
Festival. Tonight, the unpredictable and uncontrollable Gilbert Gottfried,
who has become a cult hero for voicing Iago in the films "Aladdin" and "The
Return of Jafar". Also, the wonderful musical humour of Canada's Moxy
Fruvous; Dave Atell, a writer for Saturday Night Live; and Mark Thomas.
That's sensational comedy talent on Just For Laughs, tonight at 9:30 p.m.
on CBC Television.

NEWSWORLD

8. FACE OFF:

Should the post office be privatized? That's the subject up for debate
tonight on Face Off. Guests include Deborah Bourque of the Canadian Union
of Postal Workers, and Doug Moffatt, executive director of the Canadian
Courier's Association. They'll join Judy Rebick and guest-host Andrew Coyne
to discuss the pros and cons of privatizing the post office. That's on Face
Off, tonight at 8 (EASTERN TIME) on CBC Newsworld.
