The Details

Well, since no one else seems to be talking about it, I thought I'd better touch on last night's show at Vynyl in Hollywood. Following an opening act with a good voice but over-meandering tunes (for my taste, anyhoo), Fru came on a little after 10. They announced they were opening with Madonna's Substitute My Love, actually opened with The Who's Substitute. They ended with The Drinking Song. In between, they did a jam with the opening act scatting, and played a mix of songs leaning toward the two most recent albums (Pisco Bandido, Video Disco Bargainville, Heatseeker Boy, Pork Tenderloin, abd Guinea Pig off of C -- which was for sale at $17, the extra bucks going to the house.) Topics of discussion included the BeeGees, Brittany Spears, and Elian Gonzalez.

The four were in their usual fine form, each displaying their own personality and energy, yet all clearly working hard. (Mike stumbled a bit during Boo Time, slipping into the wrong verse at one point.)

With V.D. Bargainville, Jian was doing that thing where he says "I have a college friend who sez we can pay one price for..." and then holds the mike out to the audience, who shouted "two", of course. But Jian looked unsatisfied for no visible reason, so he did it again. And again. By the third time, trying to figure out what it was he was looking for, some folks began to shout "three". It turns out there were some audience members standing right in front of Jian who weren't joining in on the shout.

A reasonable portion of the audience was there for the opening act (L.A. is not yet a big Frutown.) However, I was engrossed in the music and The Lovely Lara, so I really didn't see if they were being converted.
