Well, I suppose it's time for me to jump in :)
Hi! I'm Shawna from Ottawa and a new lister. It's funny, actually...I found ammf while fixing the bouncing problem I seemed to have every once in a while on Headline Girl (Emm Gryner's list). I was already on a bunch of other smoe lists but I wasn't aware ammf existed in mailing-list form. (newsgroups don't seem to work with my computer...)
Anwyay, here I am, and although I'm a relatively new fruvous fan (only been real crazy for about 2 years :)), I'm still proud. I thought you guys might like another review of the Folk Festival...I'll paste in the parts I wrote up about fruvous, although if you really want a full detailed report, let me know :) Here it is:
“Folk music makes me hungry” –ani d.
Yummmm…Wow. What a weekend. Full of sunshine, music and, of course, Moxy.
Next up…one of the highlight bands of the weekend, MOXY FRUVOUS! God I missed those crazies. “It’s so good to be back in OSHAWA!” yelled Jian. And they played newer favourites such as Michigan Militia (heh…Americans) and Pisco Bandito, as well as pure classics like King of Spain going into Green Eggs and Ham (HEY! Don’t knock the Beatles! These are folkies here, you’ll break their hearts! Hey! Look what you did to Mike!) Disco Bargainville was hilarious, we sang the beginning THREE times “…who says we can pay one price for *TWO*” heh…It was cool to see some fru-ish people sitting right near us so we didn’t seem like we were being an annoyance, you know, being all loud and stuff. There was much fun, singing, bopping along and Jian headbanging…
Saturday shows...
...We left in the middle of Jacob Two Two to run and see Martina on the inside stage. En route, my friend spotted Jian talking to a girl. I waited patiently for my turn and we chatted for a little bit I told him he’s cool for hating Starbucks and praise him for being all yummy and Canadian. He said he remembered me from the festival a few years back. He told me to email him sometime. He was wearing a shirt that said “Boys are great. Every girl should own one.” :D And we kept running to see Martina, all the while, I forgot to tell Jian how cool he was for managing Martina. *sigh* He's such a doll...
We figured there would be no way there would be room on the Roger's stage (indoors) when Fruvous came on, so we went to the Kitchen Party!!! (one thing about me---I should have been born in Newfoundland :)) and had a blast. But I decided to try my luck, and not only had the band not even started yet (45mins late due to power problems), there was plenty of room!
I got a good standing room spot, perfect for dancing. The power had totally blown up shortly before. They got the mics working again, but there were still no stage lights. But according to Jian, it was much cooler that way :) “Hey Dave, they can’t *see* you pointing the mic at them!” Fruvous talked about how they wanted to ride on stage in that big lemonade lemon. They sang fun stuff from Bargainville and other albums. They joked how they don’t recycle because “You Will Go to the Moon”. Great song. I love Moxy. More funny stuff happened but I can’t remember it.
...I guess I'm not being much help, setlist wise! Sorry! I'll add some stuff about Floom and the Worms, because they have some fruvous reference later...
...Floom came after and they were in the same genre as Fruvous and The Worms in the way that they were three funny guys that sang weird songs and cool harmonies. Very impressive, especially their renditions of fairytale medleys and various Beatles tunes.
The Arrogant Worms were up next. Funny funny guys…they saw a guy walk past the stage with like, five beers and said “Whoa! Look at all the beer he has! We sure are gonna seem funny to THAT guy!” They sang their usual Canada songs and a crowd favourite about being in love with Celine Dion. “She sings a song in English…and then sings one en francais… …Both songs suck…” :D heehee…
Essentially, those are the fruvous related parts...I'm not sure if they still make sense, without the other parts :) Let me know if you're really interested (and really bored! it's long!) and I'll send you my full account of the weekend.
Now it's off to work for me, looking forward to being on the list!
