Sociable! Mmmmm beer.
Okay, so last night was great. No, really. Yes, I know I've said that before and have meant it every time but last night was *really* great. Fruvous played at Top Cat's in Cincinnati OH (not the *greatest* venue, but passable). Before making the drive from Columbus, I called to get starting time info and to find out who the opening band would be (figuring that if, god forbid, it was the same band that opened last time, we could plan to arrive late without missing anything). I wish I could have seen the look on my face when I'm told that the show starts at 9 and GREAT BIG SEA is opening! I've been a fan of GBS for a year or so, but since they don't do a lot (any?) touring in the states had despaired of catching what I've heard is a great show live.
They were deadly. :) I figured, after their set, I could now die happy. (Little did I know what was to come later. Okay, I'm being hyperbolic now, but... live with it.) Lessee, they did The Chemical Worker's Song, Lukey, Goin Up, Run Runaway, Mari-Mac, When I'm Up I Can't Get Down, Excursion Around the Bay, The Night Pat Murphy Died, The Old Black Rum, General Taylor, End of the World.... and probably some others I'm forgetting. If you don't know their stuff... find it. Go to Canada. Buy their disks. Visit their web site. Offer to bear their children. Whatever. :)
Then the band which I've come to wonder if any other will ever surpass on my all time favourite list came onstage. Necessary short fashion report - Dave had on the most wicked vinyl pants I've ever seen. Figure that he, like me, must have watched Eddie and the Cruisers II lately. :) The other notable, Jian, was wearing a "I dig your boyfriend" shirt. Made me smile.
Set list and commentary (what, the above *isn't* commentary?):
(see below)
*sigh* Allison. Wow. As much as I try to live in the moment and value experiences all the more for their transitory natures, I really wish I had a tape of this.
Lessee... a couple more random comments... the running joke through the night revolved around Dave's allure... basically Dave is like Joseph in Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat (which Jian performed in at one point, leading to various snippets of songs from the musical) and the others are like his brothers, the also-rans. :) Um... oh, and from Mike we got "Galileo, Newton, Watt they were genuises all...".
That's all I can remember. Thanks again, guys, for another great show.
