I don't have a setlist assembled from tonight's show, but let me just say that it's the best I've ever seen the boys play. (that's saying a lot!) Some quick notes:
They opened for themselves. ;-) Dave played something I didn't know (a cover), Mike played a Bowie tune, Jian played I Will Hold On, and Murray played Pork Tenderloin. It was great!
Some of the highlights -- they opened with a reworked version of Splatter^2, with an acoustic run through the electric amp and the accordion playing the old piano part. A whole slew of songs from the new batch were played.
Mike and Jian left the stage, and Murray and Dave continued with ... BITTERSWEET! It sounded great. Then they left and Mike and Jian played Homeward Bound. There was an Organ Grinder in there, and they closed the set with... WALKING SPANISH by Tom Waits! Wow!
E1 was Michigan Militia and E2 was Gulf War Song. I'll post the full setlist when I sit down with a pen and the tape. Hi to everyone who was there, and I'll see you tommorow! Time for sleep now! Whee!
*OPENING SET* Dave: A House Not A Home (?) Mike: Five Years (David Bowie cover) Jian: I Will Hold On (solo) Murr: The Hunt For the Dangerous Pork Tenderloin *REGULAR SET* SPLATTER New instrumentation on this -- Dave on accordion (not keys), and Mike on acoustic guitar run through distortion on the electric amp. A new ending, as well. DARLINGTON -> "Tardy Bastards" Jam A quick jam in Darlington's chord changes talking about the people who didn't get tickets in time for these sold-out shows. INDEPENDENCE DAY The sound on this was amazing! Best I've seen, there was a completely magical something in the room for this. IF ONLY -> "How Are *WE* Doing" Banter MOON -> "Hootie & The Blowfish" Banter KIDS -> "There's this new thing called MP3.." Banter WHEN SHE TALKS PISCO TUREEN With a *great* pseudo-intro jam! SAUCEP'N I've never seen so much energy on this! The crowd was REALLY into it! ORGAN GRINDER The energy continued, and there was a great flub by Jian in the 1st verse. Then, Mike & Jian leave stage to make room for Murray and Dave to perform... BITTERSWEET!!! WOW! The first verse/chorus was Murray without instruments, the rest was with Dave's bassline and Murray played a great electric guitar solo. You could hear a pin falling through the air for this song!! Then they left stage and Mike and Jian came out to sing... HOMEWARD BOUND Ye gods, this was perfect compared to the times I'd seen it before. Jian just started tearing it up at the end, I'd never seen anything like it! -> "Ark Golfer Volunteer" Advertisement HALF AS MUCH The sound was a little cheesy with this, the electric was too loud in the mix. LAIKA RIVER VALLEY WALKING SPANISH E1: MICHIGAN MILITIA E2: GULF WAR SONG (off mic)
From Bridget:
BRIDGET & BECKY'S EXCELLENT ANN ARBOR ADVENTURE, PART THE FIRST...
OK... it's late, but it's here... the review you've all been waiting for (*grin*)...
The adventure truly began on a sunny weekend afternoon about a month ago when Becky & I REALLY started talking seriously about making this trip. Beck was NOT a Fruvirgin, but hadn't traveled more than 150 miles to see the lads. We happened to read her horrorscope that day and learned that the stars were properly aligned for her to make a pilgrimage of some sort. And of course we know better than to mess with karma... right?
So, we got our Fruvous tickets, obtained my mechanics word that my car would make it to Michigan and back, propped the postcard on the dash, and left Denver around 7:00 Sunday morning. Eastern Colorado... Nebraska... Iowa... OK, so the first day was EXTREMELY low on the excitement meter... We finally got to Eldridge, IA, where we were taken in by our cousin Michelle. After learning WHY we were heading to Ann Arbor, Michelle insisted that we play a Fruvous cd for her... and that if she didn't approve of the band, we'd have to spend the week with her instead. (o: We popped in 'Bargainville', and had her blessing before 'River Valley' was over. Kellan, our 3-year-old second cousin enjoyed dancing to 'Laika'... Left Eldridge around 10:30 Monday morning, and as we left town, spotted a water tower with the words 'River Valley' on it. Coincidence???
Arrived in Ann Arbor Monday evening, met Joe (our Fruspace sponsor) &
Donna (we finally meet!), and for a lack of anything better to do, went to
see 'Phantom Menace'. Tuesday - arrived at The Ark around 4:00, where Beck & I were the first
fans in line. This because Becky had convinced herself she wouldn't be
happy with anything but front row stage Dave seats. We were joined
shortly by Kat & her mom. The wait wasn't too bad... I've discovered that
few social situations are as conducive to meeting interesting people as
the line-up for a Fruvous show. And apparently our reputation had
spread... as folks walked up and down the line looking for the 'Colorado
people'. Doors opened at 7:30, and the wait paid off in the form of
Becky's dream seats... right in front of Dave's mike. We mingled,
acquired our Frumiles stamps from Tobey, and absorbed the atmosphere.
There was just SOMETHING in the air... at one point I turned to Beck and
told her 'This is going to be a GREAT show...'.
Mike had hinted to me last week in Boulder that often in Ann Arbor they
open for themselves. Sure enough, sometime after 8:00, Dave takes the
stage by himself. YAY! The opening set:
Dave - A House is Not a Home (nobody seems to know if this IS the title...
?) Mike - 5 Years (Bowie tune)... Mike's powerful voice NEVER ceases to
amaze me. I can't remember ever hearing him miss a note... Jian - I Will
Hold On (solo) Murray - The Hunt for the Dangerous Pork Tenderloin...
*LOL*
So after a very short break, Fruvous took the stage for their main set.
One chord of 'Splatter Splatter' was all it took the make the 1250 mile,
20 hour trip worthwhile... (o:
Dave's setlist:
I was absolutely blown away. 'Bittersweet'... 'Organ Grinder'...
'Homeward Bound'... the biggest highlights of MY evening. The banter was
funny, but there weren't really any improvs to speak of. The venue was
excellent. The acoustics were incredible. The crowd was into the show
and very attentive. The setlist was phenomenal. Donna & I later agreed
(semi tongue-in-cheek) that the best part of the show was the absence of
'Boss', 'King' and 'GEH'. I know, I know... how dare I? Love the tunes...
but they ARE getting tired. Hung for awhile at The Ark, went for drinks at
a tavern across the street, then back to the apartment... where a
combination of Fruvous and chocolate-covered espresso beans kept me up
'til sometime around 4:00... Oh well, it wasn't the first and surely won't
be the last sleep-deprived Frutrip of my life!
From Maria:
I just got back from Ann Arbor (1,375 miles traveled!) so I am going to post
the setlists from the shows. I was sitting VERY stage Murray for both shows,
so I grabbed Murray's setlists. I also crawled (yes, crawled) onstage the
second night to get Jian's setlist for my friend.
6/15 setlist according to Murray
I loved being defrugenized at this concert!!! They played a lot of new songs
that I absolutely loved and didn't mind knowing the lyrics to. Their openers
were great, and I was in awe. Somebody mentioned before that shows when the
lads didn't play KoS, you could tell, but I honestly didn't miss it. Also, I
finally made it through Saucep'n without making a mistake, so I was happy.
Not much more for me to say, considering I haven't reviewed shows before and
am not used to doing so.
