Gordon Lightfoot, who appeared at the second Mariposa Folk Festival in 1962 as a member of the folk duo the Two Tones (with Terry Whelan), headlined the 40th Mariposa Folk Festival during the three day festival being held on Friday, July 7 through Sunday, July 9. Lightfoot was the featured performer on Saturday night, performing a full festival set accompanied by his regular band. The Mariposa festival was returning to its original home in Orillia, Ontario, Canada, also Lightfoot’s birthplace. The festival has been held in other Ontario locations since 1963.
Among the many other fine performers scheduled for the three day festival were at least two who have covered Lightfoot songs. Sunday night’s headliner was Moxy Früvous, an Ontario group which frequently performs Early Mornin’ Rain in concert, much to the delight of their fans. Another act, the five member Mundy’s Bay Grog League, covered Ode To Big Blue on their album Songs Of The Sea.
