I had actually heard one of my friends talking about this random group
with a strange name a few years ago, but I never heard their music till
they came to Oberlin this fall. I came in late (but before they came
on) and stood the whole time in a little corner by the far door.
Afterwards, I borrowed the 8 bucks from a friend so I could get
Bargainville. Another friend and I even found a ride to Cleveland to
see them a few weeks later. After the Cleveland show, I was totally
hooked. A week ago I went to Toronto to the American Astronomical
Society meeting, and even though I was giving a poster and enjoyed
everything there, the thing I anticipated the most was being able to go
into a store and by Wood and B. I also began converting two people
during the trip.
Wow, I'm silly, huh?

P.S. Is that enough of a de-lurk?

Or check old Quills for them writing: "in America, we supported Nick Heyward
and Michelle Shocked, busked in Central Park and generally incited a
not-insubstantial furor throughout the North-East." (Quill #3, June '94).
Maybe that would be a hint! :-)

I've been lurking around her for a few months and I too think this is a
great opportunity to step up.
I saw Fruvous at the 1996 Philly Folk Fest. There's always so much of
the same type of music...white guys with guitars, blues, women folk
singers...that when these guys stepped up at an informal workshop wearing
jeans and t-shirts and with that wild long hair of Jian's, I was excited.
But when that 4-part harmony began, I was awestruck. They did Kids and
Spiderman and some goofy parody on how they got their name...The Ballad
of Marion Fruvous (which was a hoot!) and some other stuff. I
immediately bought Bargainville and Wood and geez, later I even got an
Internet address when I read they had a web page (how pathetic!)
Attending many concerts all over the east coast doesn't fit much into my
lifestyle...I'm a little old as FruFans go and am currently expecting a
baby...so I keep looking out for the occasional Philadelphia show, which
I attended last October. That was the first time I saw the whole shebang
live and uninterrupted and is was a GREAT experience.
I'm looking forward to the next album and if I'm not too big, I'll see
you all in Philly when they come around again.

Well, my first Fruvous experience was relatively recently, at Falcon
Ridge last year. My friends had heard of them and were telling me how
good they were, so of course we caught them at the Main Stage. I was
absolutely blown away: they were by far the best act there (with the
possible exception of the Nields, another favorite of mine). I fell in
love with them immediately: unfortunately, I didn't have any money to
buy their CDs. Eventually I got Bargainville and couldn't stop
listening to it. Since then, I've gotten the B-Album; all I need is
Wood. I'm only seen them once since then, in Ithaca, NY, but I can't
wait to see them again!

Hey Pete ---
Would you believe we actually got the only bad seats in the Birchmere for
that show? Ellen and Zard were late, and Zard had reserved the tickets,
so we got in just before the opening act (DaVinci's notebook) and got
stuck in the far left corner in the front of the club. For most of the
show we could only see Murray, and him in profile. I was really bummed,
because Zard and Ellen kept going on about how lively the guys were when
they saw them in Central Park and how visual the show was. Plus, having
to sit during a Fruvous concert goes against all logic. It was a great
show however, and if there was any part of me that hadn't been hooked by
Bargainville, it gave up the ghost that night. even if I couldn't see
Dave during King of Spain. :-)

How was I first exposed to Fruvous? Back in the spring of '94 I heard
"King of Spain" on an FM station out of Windsor, Ontario, 89X, about 3am
on a Sunday night. It blew me away. I've listened to Frank Zappa for
decades, and my immediate reaction was that any band that would record a
song like that, and sound so good doing so, must have an attitude that I
would really enjoy. I heard it a few times and finally caught the name,
but couldn't find it locally.
That summer, I went to Toronto to see a taping of "The Kids in the Hall",
and while in Toronto, went to several record stores. On the bottom floor
of Eaton Centre, I found it, and bought a couple copies, so I could share
it with some of my friends. When I got home and listened to it, the whole
CD blew me away, and that happens very rarely, but is also true of Wood,
and B.
I've seen them twice in Toledo, and once in Cleveland. I had plans to see
them much more often, but had car trouble all last summer. Perhaps this
year will be different.
I really enjoyed meeting some of the Columbus fans last year. A big hello
to Marty, Keith, Ms. Miller, and the Otterbein crowd. Hope to see you
soon.

Hello, everyone. I'm Nicole the Wonder Nerd, and I'll be your newbie

I've been a Fruhead for a year and a half now, and I still entertain
hope that they will visit California, because we NEVER get any good
groups out here.
Where was I? Oh yes--how I found Fruvous. Simplicity itself. I'm a
MAJOR They Might Be Giants fan (anyone else?), and MF often comes up
as a band that TMBG fans will probably like. So one day I was in
Tower and saw Bargainville, and I figured I'd take a chance... I loved
it. It rocked my world. I wanted more. To make a short story
shorter, I ordered the other two albums from the Fruvous Quill (anyone
know when the next one is coming out?) and have been happily listening
ever since. I've converted a few of my friends to Fruvous fandom as
well.
I notice that everyone keeps mentioning a "Jian". Is this the same
person as Jean Ghomeshi?

Yep, same boy. Here's the deal: Jean has always been "Jian"; he was born
with that name. But when his family came to Canada, his mother figured it
would be easier for Canadians to pronounce "Zhee-on" if it were spelled as
"Jean". He's been using "Jian" across the board for over a year now, and it
*should* be spelled that way on the new album (which you were asking about
before...it's March). So that's the short story. =)

I kinda took the easy route out on this thread and offered up a link to my
page, but right now I actually feel like typing (it's either that or read a
book that I was supposed to have written an essay on for today...I'll take
the typing). So here's the first 2 years of my Fru-life, the short version:
Bargainville came out in Canada in July of '93. I had never heard of them,
for some odd reason, though they were quite well-known by then. A friend of
mine (not anymore, but that's another story) literally dragged me into HMV
when we were at the mall one hot summer day, not too long after the release.
She said you HAVE to buy this, and I said I'm not too sure, and she kept
saying it's the best you have to buy it. I asked her a few times if it was
death metal, and if she was SURE it wasn't death metal (I now understand why
she laughed at that question). After about 20 minutes of trying to convince
me, I gave in. I got it home, drew myself a nice cool bath (it was VERY hot
out!), and popped it in my tape player. I was blown away!
A few months later, the huge Canadian tour was announced. By then, I
considered Fruvous to be my favorite band, though I wasn't a psycho fan like
I was soon to become. Winnipeg was of course one of the stops, and I lined
up for tickets at one of the outlets early in the morning. I literally
sprinted to the ticket wicket when the doors opened, and managed to wrangle
myself 2 front-row centre tickets (quite a feat, considering their fame at
the time and that they sold out this 1500-seat theatre). I freaked. The
show was absolutely amazing; they played 2 1/2 hours, and did all the stuff
the way they USED to do it. If anyone else there remembers Green Eggs done
with Jian's purple robe, that should take you right back! After that show,
I took on the "Fruvous Is Life" philosophy that I've followed ever since. =)
The boys didn't return until 10 months later, in September of '94. They did
2 shows in one night at the venue, and after a series of circumstances
(which I won't bother with here!), I was scheduled to meet them between
shows with some help from the Warner rep here in Winnipeg. At that time,
they were't really accessable here. It turned out that the guys were too
tired to see anyone, and I left in tears. The next day, though, they were
doing a radio show from a bar in the afternoon. I made arrangements to try
it again, and it went marvelously! After their set, I went out to the
parking lot with them and we talked for about 10 minutes. I was a sweaty,
shaking mess, but I was too excited to care! It's funny; all the guys still
remember that day, and occasionally refer to it (like when my parents met
them at the last show here...Dave: "yeah, the parking lot!" Yeesh!).
In about March of '95, I wrote to Murray. He wrote me back. I'm still a
little speechless about it.
At the Winnipeg Folk Festival that July, I went up to Murray early the first
day (trembling), held out a picture of the 5 of us in the parking lot, and
said "remember me?", thinking there was little to no chance. He gave me a
big "hi!", and an even bigger HUG. Ack. He had to run, but I asked him if
he'd have time to talk later on. He said "sure, we'll hang out". Ack.
Being the smooth operator that I am, I said "Seriously???". Brilliant. He
grinned that Murray grin and said "yeah! I'll see ya later!" I caught up
with him at dinner time, and said "so, do you want to do something? I mean,
if you can't, don't worry about it...", giving him every opportunity to back
out. And back out he did NOT, to my ashtonishment. We met at 8 that night,
and went and sat infront of the main stage. We talked for 2 hours; a bit
about band stuff, but mostly just "stuff" in general. He went to try and
find his Toronto friends' tarp so he could come back, get me, and go sit
with them. No luck, though he did come back with Mike in tow. He had to
leave shortly after that. It didn't matter; I was in heaven. Pure heaven.
One of the things Mur talked about that evening was that people from Ontario
had been following them around to their shows a lot, travelling from city to
city. I remember thinking that would be so cool to do, never in a million
years believing that I would. I'll say now what I think every day of my
life: it's funny how things turn out. =)
